The cell phone (or mobile phone) is an electronic device used in telephone communications across a wide area which is served by public cells. This allows the cell phone user to be mobile; hence the name mobile phone. In contrast, a cordless telephone can be used only within the range of a single private base station; example – a home or office location since the transmission range of such a device is limited.

A cell phone, on the other hand, can make and receive calls to and from the public telephone networks. This includes other mobile phones and fixed land-line phones throughout the world. This is accomplished through a cellular network which is provided by mobile network operators.

In addition to telephony, modern mobile phones also support a wide variety of other services. These other services include, but are by no means limited to such things as: text messaging, email, sms, Internet access,  business applications, gaming, short-range wireless communications (infrared, Bluetooth), and photography. Cell phones that offer these more general computing capabilities are sometimes referred to as “smartphones”.

In 1983, the DynaTAC 8000x was the first cell phone to be commercially available. In 1990 cell phone subscriptions were around 12.4 million. By 2010, just twenty (20) years later, cell phone subscriptions grew to over 4.6 billion. The mobile phone (cell phone) has penetrated the developing economies. The cell phone is no longer reserved for the rich or prosperous. The cell phone can be found on every level of the economic pyramid.
